According to Orange County Register advertisements, the California Cinema Circuit opened the Cypress Twin Cinema on June 14, 1974. The Circuit’s other theater in Fountain Valley opened in 1973 as the Family Twin Cinema. Both cinemas initially had a 99-cents admission policy for a second-run double feature.

While still an independent, it dropped out of the Register listings in November of 2007. Weight Watchers later moved into the building.

Wow. I haven’t thought about this place in years.

I used to attend this twin for 99 cents in the mid 70’s with my cousins, who lived in Cypress. We would split our time between this theater and the UA theaters at Cerritos Mall. I remember seeing Jaws, The Spy Who Loved Me, Family Plot, Superman and all 4 walled showing of “In Search of Historic Jesus”. I can still recall the recorded phone message these guys had (“thank you for calling Cypress Twin Cinemas…”). It always played 3rd and 4th run features, but for 99 cents it left money for concessions.

Good times.

I actually worked here for 6 years. It was my first job. I started in 2000, and lasted until 2006+ when I had to part ways. At that time it was a first run theater, average price during the day was $4 and evening was $8.50. The place had it’s issues granted. During my full run, the theater was always in need of a redressing. Unfortunately, due to disputes between the owner of the business and the owners of the property, no changes ever came. That said, we had a strong customer base and dabbled in doing one off showings like old monster movies and the such. About a year after I left is when the owner sold off the business and the property owners shuttered the place. A few people in the city counsel I believe tried to keep it going, but the option of converting the space was far more financially suitable to the owners.

This cinema was not opened by Century Circuit Circuit as I checked the listings.

It started to be listed as “Family Twin” in the LA Times on October 16th, 1987.
