Millcreek 6

Although it is easy to do so because of their locations, the Millcreek 6 should not be confused with the Millcreek Mall I-I-II which has its own listing here on Cinema Treasures. The Millcreek I-II-III was inside the Millcreek Mall and opened in the 1970’s, whereas the Millcreek 6 was a free-standing theater behind the mall. Both were opened by General Cinema and then later by Cinemark; Cinemark closed the Millcreek Mall I-II-II in 1997; the space was converted to retail.

The Millcreek 6 opened on October 17, 1986. It was similar in design to other GCC-built theaters of its time, distinguished by a grid-like marquee/entrance that looked similar to the top two-thirds of a large tic-tac-toe board. Cinemark took over the theater in 1994, later operated it as a bargain cinema, and closed it in October of 2012.

What is the Status Cinemark didn’t want to update to Digital, not closed long… I would assume there is someone out there that might be interested in assuming the lease… How close is Tinsletown?

The Tinseltown is just over one mile away to the south, which is probably one reason Cinemark closed the Millcreek 6.

Here is an article about the closing, which leaves Erie with only one operating theater. The article indicates, accurately, that viability of discount, second-run theaters is not what it once was, and that the theater is old by current industry standards.

Cinemark or the property’s owner probably did not want to invest what would be needed to upgrade the theater (digital projection, stadium seating, etc.). There is at least possibility that another operator could take it over depending on what the property owner wants to do with it or what offers are made, but it is probably more likely that in time another theater would be built, posssibly to the east of Erie, depending on demographic factors.

Last time I drove past (about two weeks ago) I saw a crew working on the roof. That suggests the owners may want to put something in there. Just what, I don’t know.

Yes Psomerf, it was bought and they are renovating it. It is going to be the new location for Elevate which is a modern-geared church.
