Located in the Bramley district to the northwest of Leeds. The 1,312 Clifton Cinema was designed by architects, William Illingworth & Son of Bradford, and the proprietors were Westfield Pictures Ltd. (Cansfields). It opened on Monday 30th January 1939 with a showing of “Woman Against Woman” starring Herbert Marshall, Virginia Bruce and Mary Astor, and also “The Case of the Missing Blonde” with Preston Foster and Patricia Ellis. The Clifton Cinema had a 30 feet wide proscenium and was equipped with Western Electric(WE) sound system.
It closed as a cinema on Saturday 17th June 1961 with “Carry On Regardless” starring Sid James and Liz Frazer. It became a Do-It-Yourself centre, called Howarth Forest Products with signs for the sale of hardwood, softwood, plywood and wallboard. The building was demolished and the site is now a Greggs bakery.
