The New Theatre Royal was built in 1868, opening in 1869. It was designed by architect William Harrison and originally had 1,800 seats. It was converted into a music hall in 1871. Taken over by the MacNaghten Vaudeville Circuit in 1904, it was re-named Palace Theatre. In 1909, it was taken over by new owners, and was converted into cinema use. It was soon operated by George Black.
By 1934, it had been re-named Gaiety Cinema. Still operating in 1954, it had closed by 1956 and was demolished.
