Thanks Movieguy for a full 16-year history of the movies that were shown at the Barclay Square Twin! Now we’re all set for Jeopardy if the opportunity ever presents itself.
One of my childhood theaters, I saw many great movies here- Xanadu, Flash Gordon, My Bodyguard, Stir Crazy, Seems Like Old Times, Bustin' Loose, Friday the 13th 1 and 2 (double feature), The Cannonball Run, Dragonslayer, Modern Problems, Friday the 13th (Parts 3, 5 and 6), Grease 2, Blade Runner, Forced Vengeance, Halloween III, The Incubus, Jekyll and Hyde- Together Again, Q, They Call Me Bruce, 48 Hrs, Bad Boys, The Hunger, Cheech & Chong’s Still Smoking, Psycho II, Jaws 3-D, D.C. Cab and The Keep (double feature), THe Karate Kid, Footloose, Splash, Hot Dog….The Movie, Streets of Fire, Body Double, Ninja III: The Domination, Silent Night, Deadly Night, Runaway, PLaces in the Heart and The Breakfast Club (double feature), Invasion USA, Death Wish 3, Pale Rider, The Hitcher, Clue, King Solomon’s Mines, Black Moon Rising, Labyrinth, King Kong Lives, Maximum Overdrive, 52 Pick-Up, Death Before Dishonor, Witchboard, Critical Condition, Revenge of the Nerds II, The Big Easy, Death Wish 4, Bloodsport, Coming to America, The Blob, Nightmare on Elm Street 4, The Big Blue, They Live!, Kinjite, Physical Evidence, Leviathan, Batman, The Horror Show, Kickboxer, Shocker, Phantom of the Opera, Darkman, Tremors, Wild Orchid, Lionheart, Sleepwalkers, Innocent Blood and Raising Cain.
It closed in fall of ‘93.
It is now occupied by a heathcare day center.
This theater was in the corner building of an L-shaped shopping center (Barclay Square). The
screen were in the ‘shoebox’ style popularized by the AMC chain and were relatively small. The
rooms were cinderblock construction with long hanging blue curtains and a slight rake to the
seats.
Probably more responsible for it’s demise were the multiplexes that opened at Granite Run Mall
and the Springfield Marple.
The Eric Barclay Square Twin Theatre opened between May and July 1974. I have a photocopy of a Philadelphia Inquirer movie listing from 8/1/1974 that list the Eric Barclay Square Twin showing “The Exorcist” and “The Sting”.
United Artists Barclay Square Twin was closed by 1994, a year or two after the opening of United Artists 69th Street 9 Theatre.
