The College Green Cinemas originally opened with one screen and 618 seats on October 23, 1970 in the College Green Shopping Center.

On May 31, 1973 the Merced Sun-Star reported that the police, for the second time in five days, had confiscated an allegedly obscene movie, “Liberated Woman". The manager was later arrested and he posted bail. The theater continued to play X-Rated movies until December of 1973 when the managers were ordered to close it as a condition of their sentencing.

On May 6, 1975 Mr. and Mrs. George Schisnewski, who also operated theaters in Tulare, Coalinga, Hollister and Chowchilla, took over the theater. The reopening attraction in the family-run theater was the exclusive Merced area showing of “The Godfather, Part II.”

In April of 1978 the Sun-Star noted that George Schisnewski was adding another screen, which would double the seating capacity. Sun-Star theater pages listings show that the cinema was run by Schisnewski theaters until it came under control of CinemaCal Enterprises in April of 1988.

The College Green Cinemas was listed in the International Motion Picture Almanac until 1994. It was closed in March 1998.

Since April of 2002 the building has been leased by Oh Wow Nickel Arcade.

The theatre is listed until the end of March 1998 which times out with the end of a 25-year lease - likely the end of the theater’s operation.
