The eighth miniplex of the Slovak CineMAX chain was opened on 29th March 2008, in the third largest Slovak town Presov in the eastern part of the country. It was the last CineMAX miniplex which was built as a part of a MAX shopping center. The ninth opened some months later in Kosice as a part of the shopping center Optima.
The opening of the miniplex in Presov caused the closing of the last single screen cinema in the town (Kino Klub), which was operated by CineMAX’s owner Continental film. Kino Klub showed movies for forty years.
Given by the low intensity of competition in Presov, the MAX shopping center is well occupied by tenants and also has high visits by customers. It has 19,000 square meters of leasable area, 105 shops, 7 cafés, 480 parking spaces and is directly connected to a big food store (Hypernova).
The cinemas are located at the southern end of mall. CineMAX Presov has five air-conditioned auditoriums and a total capacity of 849 seats. The largest hall has 306 seats, the others 203, 144, 112 and 84 seats respectively.
Among the first screened movies were the French comedy “Asterix and the Olympic Games”, Tim Burton’s “Sweeney Todd”, the horror movie “One Missed Call” and the romantic comedy “P.S. I love You”.
Digital video technologies are Christie projectors (CP2000 ZX and CP2210), Doremi cinema servers (DCP2000 and DCP2K4) and the XpanD-3D-system. The supplier of sound technologies was Dolby Labs (Dolby Digital Surround EX). The digitalization of the Screen C was financially supported by the Slovak Audiovisual Fund with the sum of 22,000 Euros (about 29,000 US$) or about 31 percent of total costs.
In 2010 the miniplex screened 5,220 showings and was attended by 162,213 spectators. The average attendance of each screening is more than 31 spectators. This is a good average result among the multi-screen cinemas in the Slovak Republic.
In the city of Presov a competitive cinema project is planed. The Dutch investor Multi Development plans to build a four screen miniplex as a part of the Forum shopping center. Due to the ongoing debt crisis in Europe, this project is on hold. Due to weak competition in the town it has a very good chance of realization.
According to the investor presentation, the four auditoriums should have a total capacity of only 354 seats. However, even the cinema project is smaller than CineMAX, it can be predicted that it will have a greater success. The reason is simple: more prominent tenants and a way better location in the city center.
