Poprad is an important tourist town in northern Slovakia and a major gateway to the High Tatras mountains with an international airport, express train station and several motorway junctions. It has 50 thousand inhabitants.

The miniplex in Poprad opened on 8th December, 2005 and just like CineMAX Trencin it was originally named Istropolis Cinema Center. First screened movies were “Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire”, “Brothers Grimm” and “King Kong”. Opening hours are from 4 pm to 10 pm weekdays and from 1 pm to 10 pm over the weekend.

CineMAX Poprad has three screens, a total capacity of 577 seats and as of March 2012 was completely digitized. Used digital video technologies were Christie projectors (CP2000 XB and CP2210), Doremi cinema servers (DCP 2000) and an XpanD-3D-system. The supplier of sound technologies was Dolby Labs (Dolby Digital EX, Dolby Surround). The digitalization of the Screen B was financially supported by the Slovak Audiovisual Fund with the sum of 10,000 Euros or about 14 percent of total costs.

Latest official data from 2010 say that CineMAX Poprad screened 3,250 showings, was attended by 121,518 spectators, and in the ranking of highest revenues of cinemas in Slovakia was on fourteenth place.

The cinema chain CineMAX is owned by Continental Film, a local movie distributor of the Warner Brothers studios. In 2011 the Slovak capital fund Arkon financially entered into the CineMAX corporation, allowing further expansion of miniplexes into Slovakia’s regions.

To mitigate the impact of the opening miniplexes in the form of closing arthouse cinemas, CineMAX has started his own art project ArtMAX, when every Wednesday every one miniplex screens an arthouse film. The prices are significant lower than for blockbuster movies.

Due to the lack of shopping centers in Poprad, MAX doesn’t have the same problems like the other MAX malls in Slovakia. It is currently (3/2012) fully occupied by tenants and the other entertainment attractions include a casino, ten bowling alleys and a climbing wall.

Currently there is no another multiscreen cinema in Poprad planed. As mentioned, Poprad is an important tourist destination, so in the medium term it is highly probable that there will be a new cinema project.

The competitive cinema network Ster Century plans to open a three-screen miniplex in April 2012 in the neighboring district Spisska Nova Ves. It will be a part of the third extension of the shopping center Madaras.
