Located in the centre of Bolton, Lancashire. The New Empire Theatre was opened on 24th August 1908. It was a handsome building, designed by architectural firm Butterworth & Duncan. It dominated Deansgate, opposite the Post Office. It was owned by Thomas Hargreaves. Within a month of opening, it was playing films as part of the programme, and was soon re-named Hippodrome Theatre.
Taken over by the H.D. Moorhouse(HDM) chain around 1916 under the Bolton & Entertainment Co. Ltd., it had become a full time cinema. British Thomson-Houston(BTH) sound equipment was installed in the late-1920’s.
Cinema use continued until the early-1940’s, when it became Bolton’s repertory theatre. It was closed in 1961, and was demolished. The site is now a car park.

The 1944 KYB gives the proprietors as being Bolton Theatre & Entertainments Ltd., they also operated the Regent and Theatre Royal at this time. H.D. Moorhouse was booking agent.
