The Krikorian Premiere 8 Theatres opened on June 22, 1990 with a midnight t-shirt showing of “Dick Tracy” starring Warren Beatty. Patrons were admitted wearing theatre-stamped Dick Tracy t-shirts sold literally off of a nearby street well before the complex had finished construction. While the movie “Dick Tracy” underperformed, the El Cajon 8 itself went on to quickly become one of the first Krikorian chain’s busiest locations - later even breaking company attendance and snack bar records on Thanksgiving Day Weekend 1991.
The decor was black, teal and copper, with copper mirrored lobby ceiling, and most notably, a gorgeous set of gleaming copper stanchion poles (as opposed to the usual brass). The main theatre was a THX certified house, but not 70mm equipped.
The Krikorian chain was sold to Regal and they operated the El Cajon 8 for many years. It was closed in 2000 and today is used by a church.

A Spanish language church sits here now.
This was the main theater I went to for most of my childhood. First movie I saw here was Ducktales the Movie: Treasure of the Lost Lamp on a Sunday afternoon with my parents. Saw a lot of films here over the years: The Rescuers Down Under, The Rocketeer, Beauty and the Beast, Ace Ventura: Pet Dective, the Sandlot, the Muppets Christmas Carol, Muppet Treasure Island, Batman Forever, Hercules, the Hunchback of Notre Dame, Batman: Mask of the Phantasm, Mortal Kombat, Star Trek: Generations, Star Trek: First Contact, Beavis and Butt-Head Do America, Tomorrow Never Dies and more.
I miss that… and Playco Toys, the arcade right next door, and the Discovery Zone from the mid-90s. Sadly, nearly everything on the block is gone now.
Opened June 22nd, 1990. Grand opening ad posted.
Closed 2000 by Regal.
