New Moon Twin Drive-In

The New Moon Twin Drive-In was opened in 1954 by Open Air Theatres Inc. In addition to the 1,000 car capacity, there was an indoor auditorium located in the center of the site, which had 400 seats and was air conditional, as well as central heating.. The building also contained a large concession facility and the projection booth. There was also an outside patio with 150 seats. The screens were named East Tower and West Tower, and were in a Streamline Moderne style, with a moon & clouds on the rear of the screens. To complement the facilities available, there was a large playground with motorized and standard rides.

Above address is incorrect. Approx. address for this drive-in was 5100 Gerstner Memorial Boulevard, Lake Charles, LA 70607. This is SE of town, not downtown. Most ramps, east screen and concession/projection building foundation are still there.

Now home to a golf driving range called the New Moon Drive-In Range (get the pun?). Address is given as 4200 Gerstner Memorial Boulevard.

I remember going here almost every weekend back in the early 1980s. Some really badly dubbed R-rated foreign films that made no sense. I guess that wasn’t the point, though, it was just a night out. LOL

Boxoffice, April 30, 1962: “Maurice Kleinman (opened) the New Moon Drive-In after a week spent repairing the screen, damaged by fire.”
