Originally at this address was the Liberty Theatre whichj opened in 1918. It was a wood-frame theatre seating just under 475, the popular venue was burned to the ground in 1936. (It has its own page on Cinema Treasures).
It took 12 years until a new theatre was built on the site, named the Reality Theatre. It opened on December 23, 1948 with Esther Williams in “On an Island With You”. According to the story, the builder of the theatre came up with the name Reality because "the people of Robertsdale only dreamed of the theatre reopening, but that dream has now become Reality."
The theatre operated for another decade before closing, but reopened once more in the late-1960’s before closing again in the early-1980’s.
After sitting empty for many years, the wonderfully restored Reality Theatre today serves as the Coal Miners Museum and Entertainment Center which is operated by the Broad Top Area Coal Miners Historical Society.
