The Mohawk at 133 East Main Street was built in 1909. It began life, however, as the Shaffer Opera House. Vaudeville was added to film screenings and the name changed to the Lyceum in 1915. In 1917 Edward C. Klapp leased the theater and its name changed to the Strand. Eventually, the Schine family of Gloversville bought the Strand and hired architect John J. McNamara to overhaul it. The Mohawk opened on April 30, 1949, just twelve days after the Tryon opened. The Mohawk closed in November 1966. It was torn down and the site is now a parking lot.

my dad was the projectionist at all of amsterdam’s theaters…as was his father, even before the talkies. i was an usher for a time (remember changing the marque titles in winter)… and filled in as projectionist during vacations and breaks during my last year in hs. so, so long ago now.
