Grand opening ad

Gulf States Theatres opened the Essen Mall Cinema in late-1985. A year later, this cinema, along with University Cinema, Bon Marche Twin, and Bon Marche Cinema 11, were all sold to United Artists. With the opening of Cinemark’s Tinseltown in late-1996 and planned opening of UA’s Citiplace Theater, UA decided to make Essen Cinema 6 a discount theater. This venture was short-lived as UA closed the theater on December 14, 1997.

In February 1998, Chuck Berger, former manager of Oak Cinema 8, reopened the theater and continued to screen independent films, art films, and midnight showings of “The Rocky Horror Picture Show.” This venture was short lived, due to poor ticket sales and the inconvenient location of the theater, and Berger shut the theater down on December 31, 1998.

I liked this theater and saw several independent films here including Get on the Bus (1996), the English Patient (1996), Orgasmo (1998), Slums of Beverly Hills (1998), and Happiness (1998). Best art house film BR has had.
