Located in the Opera district of central Paris on the site of the Paillard restaurant. The Pathe Francais opened on 23rd March 1940 as a 1,150-seat single screen cinema. It specialised in screening French films, and was a luxurious cinema. It was operated by Jacques Haik who also operated the Rex Cinema.
In 1979, the original auditorium was sub-divided into 2-screens, and another 3-screens were added from the former Cinemonde Opera around the corner at 4 Chaussee-d'Antin (which has its own page on Cinema Treasures).
Seating capacities in the screens are 400, 545 in the original auditorium space, with the smaller screens in the former Cinemonde Opera being 95, 100 and 120. By 2018 it had been re-named Gaumont Opera - Cote Francais. It was closed on 9th December 2018.
In April 2019 it was being prepared to be gutted internally and by 2023 it had converted into retail use.

Had the joy and honour of working at the Grand Hotel, two blocks from here 2006-2008…At this point this is the slightly poor relation of the three Gaumont theatres in the neighborhood…serviceable but without the modern functionality of the Premier across the way and the glamour of the old Paramount Opera now Gaumont Capucines
Friendly staff that would gladly just sell me a box of popcorn when I didn’t have time for a film…saw mostly middle of the road French product here
The name changed to Gaumont Opéra – côté Français and there are now 994 seats.
