News About This Theater

Le Balzac

Located just off the Champs-Elysees, the Cine Balzac opened on 6th May 1935 with King Vidor’s “The Wedding Night” starring Gary Cooper. Seating was provided for 876 in a stadium plan, with a stepped raised section at the rear. An unusual feature was the layout of the seating area, which was in a semi-circle, similar to an amphitheatre, and was was a ‘first’ for Paris. There was a central dome in the ceiling, which was surrounded by smaller domes, all containing concealed lighting. Initially it screened foreign films, especially American comedies.

Always independently operated, it was sub-divided into three screens in 1975. Screen 1 now has 385 seats, retaining the semi-circular configuration. Screen 2 has 145 seats and Screen 3 has 81 seats. It was renovated in June 1992. Today operating as an art house cinema.
