Built for Harry Crandall, who operated several theaters in Washington, DC, the Strand Theatre was opened on September 3, 1920. In 1925, Crandall sold his theaters to the Stanley circuit, and the house passed into the control of the Schine circuit in 1944.
The Strand Theatre was the last operating theater in Cumberland when it showed its final movie on September 4, 1972, 52 years after it opened. The building has since been demolished.

The Schine circuit took over operation of the Strand in 1944, according to a March 21, 2015 article in the Cumberland Times-News. The Strand’s last day of Operation was September 4, 1972.
