Rex Theatre

Located in the north Sydney suburb of Mosman. The Anzac Memorial Hall was opened on 5th May 1924. In 1934, it was taken over by Rex Theatres Pty., and they employed Sydney cinema architect Guy Crick to convert the building into a cinema. A balcony was added, and the entire reconstruction only took five weeks.

The Mosman Kings Theatre opened on 31st August 1934 with Greta Garbo in "Queen Christina" and W.C. Fields in "You;re Telling Me".

The Mosman Kings Theatre was re-named Rex Theatre when the New Kings Theatre opened in Mosman in 1937. Despite the name change to Rex Theatre, many locals still referred to it as the ‘old’ Kings Theatre.

The Rex Theatre was closed on 17th March 1939. By 1941, it had reopened, but could not compete with the newer, more luxurious cinemas in the area, and was closed on 31st December 1945 with “Humphrey Bogart in "Casablanca” and Geraldine Fitzgerald in “Shining Victory”.

It became an antique market, and remains in retail use today.
