Cosy Picture House

The Cosy Picture House was situated in the old Town Hall building in the High Street.

It was at first floor level and operated until 1938 when the new Regal Cinema opened. (It was still listed in editions of Kinematograph Yearbook through to at least 1940, with no mention of the Regal Cinema). The Cosy Picture House was later gutted and turned into office space.

Nothing now remains to suggest it was ever a cinema - indeed whilst trying to trace it, I found out that most people thought it had been demolished.

The Cosy Cinema ceased to oparate when the Regal Cinema in Westgate opened in 1938. The piano that was used for the silent pictures in the Cosy was housed for many years behing the screen in the Regal until it was in turn closed in the 1960’s

Is this the Bryan Pearson that I know who collects trivial information about what goes on at the back of old theatres?? And did you ever play on this piano? KMS

I played on this piano in the 1960s when my friend was projectionist at the Regal Cinema. It was behind the screen at that time. The next time I played the piano was in 1993 when I visited my music teacher, Herbert Macintosh, who bought the piano and relocated it to his home in York prior to the demolition of the the cinema in the late 1980s. I have a photo of the Regal Cinema (closed) in 1984 and a photo of the empty projection box prior to demolition.

I would still like to think that your parents were snogging up the back of this cinema and made a Bryan – but what was the name of the little village you mentioned? Is your music teacher, Herbert still with us?? I would like to see your photo sometime..K

I was looking in the West Yorkshire Archives today and they hold an architects plan for a proposed “Cosy Cinema” to be built in Kirkgate, Tadcaster. The plan does not show exactly where it was to be built but it might be possible to work it out from details of an adjacent building. Does anyone know anything about this ?.

From looking at the front of the building it looks to be a 1930’s design.

It is now clear that the proposed site of this new cinema was to be on the North side of Pegg Lane, off Kirkgate. An old, jettied building on the site was demolished and a “temporary” building was built on the site. It is currently a pet shop.
