The Theatre Royal was opened in 1841. Located on Adam Street at the corner with Cross Street, some distance from the centre of Goole. The single storey building has little architectural merit on its exterior. Inside the auditorium, the proscenium was 18 feet wide, and there was decent sized stage. Seating was provided in orchestra stalls and a balcony, with slips along the side-walls. In the early-1900’s, it was screening films as part of the variety programme.
In 1915, the Theatre Royal was damaged by a German bombing raid by Zeppelin airships. It then suffered damage in a gale and was never re-opened. Standing derelict for many years, it was obviously re-roofed at some stage. It became a public hall, a warehouse and a garage.
It has been in use as a builder’s warehouse for many years. There are still remains of the original decorative plasterwork inside the building, although the balcony has been removed.
