It was a single screen seating 825 and was located in the Westmount Shopping Centre at 111 Avenue & Groat Road NW. It was operated by Windsor Theatres Ltd. and at that time it played a lot of road show engagements.

On August 12, 1965 it was taken over by Famous Players and was renamed Westmount Theatre. In 1971 the theatre was twinned seating 1,300. Then in 1985 it was a fourplex seating 1,433.

In 2005 the cinemas were operated by Empire Theatres. The fourplex features automated box office, stadium seating and first run attractions.

The correct spelling should be “Westmount,” according to the Empre Theatres website.

Also, the theater’s AKA needs to be corrected.

The theatre first opened in 1959 as the Sahara. It became the Westmount in 1965 when Famous Players took it over, then it became a twin theatre (not a triplex) in 1971. The current fourplex opened in 1985 in another part of the mall.

There were three separate cinema complexes in the mall

  • The Sahara / Westmount A-B (Famous Players) 1956-1987

  • The Famous Players Westmount 4 1984-2011

  • The Canadian Odeon – Cineplex Odeon Westmount 4 1985*-2000
