Entrance is adjacent to the historic and ornate Capitol Hotel. A very long lobby runs to the back of the hotel where the auditorium sits and beyond that a very large stage - the entire building is quite huge, reminds one of the Warner Theatre in Atlantic City on a smaller scale. Opened as the Auditorium de Quebec in 1903 for plays, opera and vaudeville, movies were added in the 1920’s and it was renamed Capitol Theatre on July 27, 1930.
The Capitol Theatre declined in the 1970’s, and closed in 1982. But ten years later the Capitol Theatre was meticulously restored, reopening in 1992. This beautiful Beaux-Arts style auditorium and lobby have retained all their opulent splendor. Currently it is used for performing arts.

The Capitol Theatre is now part of a complex known as Le Capitole de Quebec. It includes the theatre, a cabaret, hotel and restaurant. The former Cinema de Paris, next door, is now known as Le Cabaret du Capitole. It has been altered and seats 565 patrons. According to this website, this theatre opened as the Auditorium de Québec with a beaux-arts interior; the original architect was Walter S. Painter. It was remodeled in 1927 by architect H. Laberge when the theatre’s name was changed to the Capitol by Famous Players. Another makeover occurred in 1935 under the direction of Raoul Chenevert; it was apparently that year when it became a full time cinema.
