Stadium Theatre

Located in the Tottenville district of Staten Island. The Stadium Theatre stands today and bulb sockets can still be seen on its marquee. The name is also still noticable on the marquee.

The Stadium Theatre opened in 1927 with 1,037 seats on a single floor. It had closed as a movie theatre by 1957, by that time only operating at weekends. By January 1969 it had re-opened as the New Stadium Theatre in use as rock-music venue.

The only other piece of information available is that the theater housed a roller rink in the 1970’s.

It remains closed and ‘For Sale or Lease’. By July 2020 renovation work was being carried out.

This theater may have stood in the southernmost S.I. neighborhood of Tottenville.

Unfortunately, the Stadium Theatre is slated for the wrecking ball very soon :–(

I was in there a few years ago and there was nothing but open, empty space. Nothing but bare block walls and a level floor…No signs that it ever was a theatre.

It was sold for $235,000 on August 10, 1998. It has been listed for sale for a few years, off and on with asking prices from $925,000 to $1,500,000. Last listed price was $1,800,000 this past October (2004)

The current owners are planning for mid-rise condo apartments, at least, that’s the last word on it.

Here’s the remarks from the last MLS listing, October 2004:

THIS EXISTING BUILDING IS BEING APPROVED FOR 16 “MANHATTAN STYLE” LUXURY APTS,COMPLETE W/PARKING & GYM PLUS ROOM FOR POOL OR TENNIS COURT. APTS TO HAVE LOFT STYLE FEELING W/HIGH CEIL. GREAT INVESTMENT,PLANS IN OFFICE. COULD BE USED AS COMMERCIAL OR BOTH.

Sad to see another theatre go!

In the late 60’s it was a rock club, very popular with college kids from the southern half of the Island.

The place looks good on the outside, but it says the interior has been gutted.

Wasn’t this also a rollar skating ring at one time?

Apparently some kind of stalled renovation is currently going on at this location.
