Liberty Theatre

An article in the Box Elder Journal on April 15, 1976 by Sarah Yates gives the history of theaters in Brigham City. The Liberty Theatre was originally called the Alta Theatre when it opened on April 30, 1913. According to information found at the Brigham City public library, a Florence Theatre occupied the site before the Alta Theatre. Photos of both theaters can be found in the regional history section of the library.

A 1923 story published in the Ogden Standard-Examiner concerns a 20-year-old man from a prominent family who was sentenced to 90 days in jail. His crime: yelling FIRE! in a crowded theater. Only the actions of the manager who explained that it was a false alarm prevented any injuries.

On May 10, 1936, a Standard-Examiner article noted that that the Liberty Theatre after being closed for seven years was being converted to a warehouse by its new owner L. Bloom, a hide and wool dealer.

A 1975 newspaper story featured a photo of the Liberty Theatre and said that it was soon to be demolished but in 1977 the city council was still deciding whether to use the building, which they purchased in 1973, as a storage facility. The final demolition date is unknown.
