A conversion of an existing building built in 1895. The New Grand Theatre was opened on December 25, 1932 with Marlene Dietrich in “Blond Venus”. On November 13, 1936 it was renamed Roxy Theatre. The Roxy Theatre was still open in 1955, but had closed by 1957.

The Roxy Theatre seated 485 people.
It is amazing how many theatres are named ROXY in imitation of the once famous name of the New York City panjandrum of the movie palace: Samual Lionel Rothapfel = “Roxy”. His namesake was the famous ROXY THEATRE in NYC, which outlasted him by only 25 years when it was demolished in 1960. The whole story is in that landmark book “The Best Remaining Seats: The Story of the Golden Age of the Movie Palace” by the late Ben M. Hall in 1961. Various editions of it are sometimes available from www.Amazon.com, but only the first edition contains the color plates.
In 1932, the 19th Century building that had been home to Rosenbaum Hall and then the R.L. Fishburn & Sons Store from 1894 to 1932 was transformed into what was going to be called theRoxy Theatre. The Fishburn block had held City Hall in earlier years. During the project, Harmon Perry ran out of money and the project stalled.
Nielson Theatre Circuit bought the facility continuing the project and opening it as the New Grand Theatre on Christmas Day 1932. The first film at the venue was “Blonde Venus.” Under new operators, Intermountain Theatres, the theatre was renamed the Roxy Theatre beginning on November 13, 1936. In 1949, the Nielsons were back and refurbished the venue.
