The Washington Drive-In was a small rural drive-in serving Wilkes County in East Georgia, just about between Athens and Augusta.
The drive-in held a little over 150 cars typical for that size town. It was run by Martin Theatres as was the downtown theatre in Washington, the Wilkes Theatre.
Today, one can find nothing of this drive-in. Gone within a few years of opening. Television, most likely the cause. The closest drive-in to the Washington Drive-In was the Melody Drive-In, in Thomson, Georgia. While researching the Wilkes Theatre for CT, I asked a lady with the Washington-Wilkes Historical Society about the Washington Drive-In. She being in her middle 60’s and a life long resident she told me she had never heard of the Washington Drive-In theatre. It closed in the late-1950’s. The Wilkes Theatre in Washington would run films into the 1970’s.

Any help with more ino would great, but i don’t expect much for the WASHINGTON DRIVE-in.
O.K. Mike.
Mike, do you happen to know the address or crossroads of this drive-in?
I found a Martin Drive-In in Washington from ABOUT 1955-1975, it held 300 autos. Martin Theaters of Georgia, Incorporated also owned this drive-in till at least 1967. That’s all the info I have, think it’s the same theater.
I think you have it.300 cars is alot for a town that size, but i guess there is no set limits on cars. The Wilkes Theatre{on CT} was a Martin Theatre. It is about 40 miles from my home.My 1956 Motion Picture Almanac has a Washington Drive-in listed under the Martin banner. Thanks.
AKA:
MARTIN DRIVE-IN.
thanks, I gave up trying to find it, I guess anyone that would know must real old or dead.
I finally found a local who remembers the drive in, he could not recall the name, but the 62 year old man said it was located on US HWY 78 coming out of Thomson, Ga.the Box office stood for a long time, colored pink he thought…..at least we have the road it was on..
Found it, that old local’s tip was correct. The current address today is 1260 Lincolnton Rd, Washington, GA 30673. It can be seen in a 1955 aerial image but completely demolished by 1971.
