Spring Cinema on the Square

Located in downtown Crystal River, the Regent Theater was opened on September 27, 1934 with Stan Laurel & Oliver Hardy in “Sons of the Desert”. I continued with that name until at least 1950.

Later renamed Spring Theater and finally Spring Cinema on the Square, it was closed on October 1, 1987 with Kevin Kostner in “The Untouchables”. I suspect it may have been located at 558 N. Citrus Avenue, which has since been demolished.

The Regent Theatre opened its doors on September 27, 1934 with Laurel And Hardy in “Sons Of The Desert” along with a few unnamed short subjects.

  • What’s so weird about its grand opening advertisement and its upcoming showings afterward is that articles of the Citrus County Chronicle listed as the Crystal River Theatre, but headlines confirmed that it was named the Regent Theatre. That was fixed by the following year.
