Located in the Carlton district of inner city Melbourne. Built as part of the Melbourne Museum, the IMAX Melbourne Theatre opened on 15th May 1998 with "Everest". It is located next-door to one of Melbourne’s historic Landmark buildings, the Royal Exhibition Building of 1880.
Most of eight-storey high cinema is located underground. The screen at the IMAX Theatre measures 28metres high x 31metres wide, and is said to be the ‘largest movie screen in the world’. First run feature films now play in the programming, as well as traditional IMAX documentary features. The cinema has 2D and 3D capabilities.

The below-linked mentions this screen is the world’s second largest (presumably after Lotte Cinema Super Plex G Theater World Towe, Seoul, South Korea which is 34m wide) at 32m wide and up to 23m high.

Surprised it doesn’t have more seats (480). TCL Chinese Theatre in Hollywood, for example, is 28.65m wide x 14.02m high and has 986 seats (the most of any IMAX auditoria worldwide).
LARGE_screen_format: AFAIK the TCL Chinese Theatre IMAX auditorium doesn’t conform to the basic IMAX geometry requirements in that the auditorium depth exceeds the screen width.
(“Back of an envelope” calculation: 23 rows deep x assume 4ft. per row = 92ft. [i.e. almost ~94ft. screen width!] front-to-back distance required for the seating alone—no space for the central gangway nor between the screen and front row!)
A quick look at a photo of the IMAX Melbourne auditorium reveals that the rows are widely spaced.
“Back of an envelope” calculation: If the auditorium depth = screen width and the first row is 0.35x screen width from the screen, per classic IMAX requirements, this leaves about 68ft. depth for the seating. There are 12 rows, so this works out at slightly less than 5.7ft row spacing. Taking these assumptions further, were the row spacing reduced to 4ft., then this would enable around 200 extra seats.
