This was the 2nd Richards Theatre to operate in Fayette, AL. (The 1st Richards Theatre has its own page on Cinema Treasures). This Richards Theatre opened on November 2, 1947. It was named after Richard Cobb. The theatre once housed the offices of Cobb Theatres. The theatre closed in 1977 and was later demolished.
The site is now part of the Regions Bank.

Mrs. Lucille Cobb was the president and R.C. Cobb was the booker and buyer all of this in 1956.
Previous theatres owned by the Cobb Family was the Roxy (where Little Beaver appeared in person one time. When the larger, more-modern Richard’s Theatre opened everyone went there – expecially on Monday Jackpot nights. If you were there and your ticket stub number was called, you won whatever amount the weekly prize was. If no winner, the dollar amount increased for the next week.
I remember several 3-D movies being shown at the Richards and later on the screen was enlarged for Cinemascope features.
Although I don’t know this to be a fact, I think it’s more likely that it was named after the original founder Jefferson A. Richards, grandfather of R. C. (Richard) Cobb. Jefferson A. Richards opened the family’s first theatre, Richards Theatre, in Fayette in 1927. I suspect the 1940 theatre replaced the original 1927 Richards Theatre. If anyone knows for sure, please feel free to confirm my conclusions or correct them.
Actually, this Richards didn’t open in 1940. The original Richards closed before this Richards opened its doors, which is on November 2, 1947.
