The Chung King Theatre was a small theatre opened at an unknown date in the 19th Century in Sheung Wan on the Hong Kong Island. The theatre as seen from a photograph was a three-storey Chinese style building. The theatre orginally known as Tung Hing Theatre and renamed as Chung King Theatre after the theatre was sold. Tung Hing is the Cantonese pronunciation of its Chinese name, literally meaning "let’s celebrate together." Chung King is also the Cantonese pronunciation of its Chinese name, Chung King is a city in Sichuan, China. The exact English names of the Tung Hing Theatre and Chung King Theatre if any are unknown.
Besides Cantonese operas, films were also known to be shown at the theatre after the performance of Cantonese operas. The date of the film showings as said by Yu Mo-wan’s Ancedotes of Hong Kong Cinema was 23rd February, 1900, while according to an article "Hong Kong’s Cinematic Beginnings 1896-1908" written by Law Wai-ming and translated by Stephen Teo, "in the Chinese Mail edition of 19th February[1900]an advertisement stated that the Hang Tong Chun opera troupe would be putting on a programme of Western moving pictures on 20th February[1900]. The opera troupe performed for seven days, each day putting on a different programme with the added attraction of the exotic Western pictures." Since the 19th February and 23rd February editions of the Chinese Mail are unavailable, the two screening date of "exotic Western pictures" at the Chung King Theatre cannot be ascertained.
