This theatre was built in the mid-1960’s. It was a single large screen auditorium with a stage. They closed it for a week their last feature on the old screen was “Jimmy the Kid” starring Gary Coleman, and made it into a twin theatre with very small screens and two long and narrow auditoriums. Cinema 1 reopened a week later showing the movie “The Missionary”, which did not draw many people. Cinema 2 on the right hand side of the lobby opened a week later showing “Peter Pan”, while opening on Cinema 1 that week was “Honky Tonk Man” starring Clint Eastwood.
When it was a single screen theatre, two projectors were used and switched about halfway through the movie. When it was twinned, one projector was used for each screen and platters were installed. Also Dolby sound was added to Cinema 1.
It remained a first run theatre for a while but storey turned it into a dollar cinema then finally increased the tickets to $1.25. It closed late March of 1993 after the big blizzard hit us. It sat empty for a long time and finally the entire shopping center was demolished and a new one built. I have fond memories of this theatre, the lobby, the wonderful popcorn, the staff, the manager David and Sam the projectionist. When I would go to our High school football games on friday nights I would stop by Sherwood and get my popcorn for the game. The stadium popcorn was bad but that fresh theatre popcorn was super. I went up in the projection booth once and saw how the equipment works.
