BATTLE OF THE WESTERN STARS - Giles Robb, manager of the Princess Theater in Toledo, Ohio offered patrons a Gene Autry-Roy Rogers double feature in 1943, billed as “The Battle of the Western Stars.” Giles also had ballots available in the lobby so the audience could vote for their favorite.
Similar “battles” were staged hundreds of times at theatres around the country over the next two decades.
