“I found this photo on ebay. The location is 92nd & Commercial. The movie title shown on The Commercial Theatre marquee is Harold Lloyd’s “The Cat’s Paw” which was released in July 1934. Based on how people are dressed, it would be the later part of the year. My best guess is that this is an Armistice Day Parade, which would have taken place on November 11. The men in uniform may be from the South Chicago Post of the American Legion, headquartered at 9217 Houston. They would parade throughout South Chicago and fire a volley at 92nd & Commercial. In addition to the Commercial Theatre and the Post Office, some of the businesses visible are the Commonwealth Edison Electric Shop, A. Schulte (part of a chain of cigar stores), Jewel Shop(?), Herbert Shirt Shops and Red Star Drugs. The photo would have been taken by Karl Stalla the owner of Calumet Studio located at 9124 Commercial at the time. He was The Daily Calumet’s official photographer.”
