News About This Theater
- Apr 22, 2012 — iPic opens in Boca Raton
An entertainment component of the retail/residential Mizner Park development, AMC opened the Mizner Park 8 as a replacement for its Boca Mall 6. State-of-the-art for its time of opening on December 13, 1990, several auditoriums were equipped with digital audio and massive, eye-filling screens. Mizner Park has hosted numerous film festivals through the years, including the springtime Palm Beach Film Festival.
After AMC’s attempt to expand into a megaplex was rejected, Muvico’s (later Cinemark’s) new Palace 20 drew business away from Mizner Park. Sunrise Cinemas assumed management in 2001, adding international/alternative films to the ongoing lineup. Frank Theatres took over in 2010, but closed it suddenly over New Year 2010/2011.
It was renovated to the plans of architectural firm Development Design Group, it reopened on May 4, 2012 as the iPic Boca Raton.

An article from the Palm Beach Post:
View link I am just speculating, but it seems possible that Frank Theatres was unable to come to terms with the Mizner Park center management over the Sunrise debt.
Another issue might’ve been the MPC’s now two-decades-old infrastructure, maintained as well as possible but showing increasingly obvious need of refurbishment. Last time I went a couple months ago, the (frayed) seat sank a little further than usual. Given the increased popularity of combining fast-casual dining/drinking with movies, I get the vibe the revitalized MPC may follow suit (giving Cinemark Palace’s The Premier, not to mention Mizner Park’s numerous restaurants, some competition).
One of the ticket-takers had been there since the AMC days — I hope he’s been able to find new work!
Revisiting the link C Walczak posted, some clarification has been added since publication:
“According to the most recent owner of the cinema, Frank Theatres, Sunrise agreed to close the cinema in January. When Frank Theatres took over a number of Sunrise Cinemas locations in October, it agreed to run this theater until its closure at the end of 2010, said Rob Reynolds, COO and CFO of Frank Theatres.
‘Its unfortunate,’ Reynolds said. ‘It’s a nice location. We just got into the game too late.’ He said a national chain will be taking over the cinema and revamping it."
Street view (with indistinct former Sunrise Cinemas signage) is at the south end. U.S. 1 would be immediately to the left. The theatre’s low-level street marquee was slightly further north, now used to promote events elsewhere in Mizner Park.
As of 6/11, the windows are covered, with no further word of renovation activity.
iPic Theaters is now scheduled to renovate the Mizner Park Cinema space as a boutique theater with restaurant and bar, reopening scheduled for May 2012.
