Sunset Drive-In

Found this theatre while looking through the "Images of America" book on Kingston, in Kingston, NY.

There’s a picture of the theatre being retrofitted for CinemaScope. "The Sunset Drive-In on Route 28 (the old Plank Road) is receiving a 1957 retrofit to accommodate CinemaScope movies…The drive-in occupied the approximate location of the first tollhouse on the road."

The Sunset Drive-In had opened April 26, 1949 with Jon Hall in “The Prince of Thieves” & Bud Abbott & Lou Costello in “Pardon My Sarong”. By 1955 it was operated by Harry Lamont and Ligget & Florin Ct. It was demolished in the 1990’s.

The concession building remains, comparing historical aerials from the drive-in and current show the building is still on the church property.
