Originally built as a town hall for this small town, to the extreme northeast of what today is Greater London (the Central Line tube railway terminates here). The Picture House opened in 1912 and by the early-1920’s it was operated by the Shipman & King circuit, when it was listed with 419 seats.
By 1924, it had been re-named Picture Palace, under an independent operator. It was gutted by a fire in 1935, and was re-built as the Empire Cinema, re-opening in 1936.
The Empire Cinema was closed in 1954, and was converted into a Tesco supermarket. In later years, its façade was removed, but the former foyer is use in 2009 as the Portrait Studio and the auditorium is in office use.
