Opened on June 16, 1949, the Heights Theater was closed in 2000 but reopened in the fall of 2002 under new ownership. It had closed by December 2021 and was taken over by His Tabernacle Family Church. The church reopened the Heights Theater on April 11, 2026 to be used for occasional screenings and rentals and two free screenings a month of family movies.

The Strand was located in downtown Elmira and was demolished in the 70’s. This was always the Heights.
A genuine “cinema treasure” and success story due to the hard work and dedication of the current owner Craig Spencer. With special thanks to him for a tour and permission to post the 1949 photo of the Heights. Three views of the theater here, here and here. Two auditorium views here and here. November 25, 2008 ends my 6 years of operating the Heights Theater. I have sold it to the owners of the Glen Theater in Watkins Glen New York.

Closed as showtimes are not seen anywhere and the website disconnected.
This is very discouraging Craig was a great owner. I came here when I went to visit my friend in Ithaca New York. Such a nice theater inside great prices for the movies great staff very friendly and knowledgeable. This is a real shame it’s not lit up showing movies Friday Saturday and Sunday on the silver screen. No news if the theater will reopen again
Sadly the theater is currently not open. The previous owner decided to forego a deal that would of kept the theater open and instead gave it to His Tab Church who haven’t run the theater since given it. It is currently for sale and hopefully someone comes thru and runs the theater right.
