Galaxy Cinemas opened on September 1, 2006, surpassing the Capitol 4 as the city’s largest megaplex.
This behemoth of a theatre was instrumental in the closure of Capitol 4 and possibly that of Pacific Cinemas, as well, who couldn’t compete.
Some have criticised Galaxy Cinemas for what they perceive as destroying Saskatoon’s movie scene. It was renamed Scotiabank Theatre Saskatoon & VIP in 2014. On April 27, 2018 screen 12 was converted into an IMAX theatre. By February 2024 that screen had been converted into an UltraAVX theatre.

Just looking at what’s playing today at the Centre cinemas, it seems to me that they are all recent releases, so I don’t see the problem.
And this will be changed to Scotiabank Theatre Saskatoon and VIP Cinemas later this year.

Now the name is official: Scotiabank Theatre Saskatoon & VIP.
Just a correction on the main write-up: Pacific didn’t close because it couldn’t compete. It closed because the company that owned the Galaxy owned Pacific and Capitol 4/Empire and only wanted one theatre downtown, which is a shame.
This theatre opened as Galaxy Cinemas Saskatoon on September 1, 2006. Its opening movies include Crank, The Wicker Man, Invincible, Talladega Nights, The Illusionist, Little Miss Sunshine, Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest, and Material Girls.

This cinema once opened an IMAX theatre (conversion of theatre 12) on April 27, 2018, in time for “Avengers: Infinity War.” However, as of the time I’m writing this (February 25, 2024), it has since been converted into another UltraAVX theatre.
