Disney built its Disney’s Fantasia 2000 IMAX theatre on this site.

This opened on July 13th, 2001. I posted a couple of grand opening ads in the photo section.
That’s exactly what happened. Theatre was under construction when Edwards bit the dust. The Howard Hughes Promenade opened up with this big massive shell of an empty theatre in the early part of Summer 2001. A short time later, NA bought it and named it The Bridge Cinema deLux and the crowds came in DROVES!
Anyone can confirm if this was supposed to be an Edwards Cinemas but was sold/bought by National Amusements before construction was finished. It was still being built when Edwards declared bankruptcy.
This theater’s IMAX has been converted to Cinemark XD, yet Chris reports the screen remains the same size, so does that mean films like Guardians of the Galaxy (and previously The Dark Knight) which expand at times to fill the full aspect ratio of the IMAX screen will still have that feature in the new XD theater? If not, I guess the AMC Universal Citywalk Stadium 19 with IMAX will be my new destination for such films.
Wow…that is ONE GNARLY SOUND SYSTEM! Very impressed with this XD room! Surely all the XD’s aren’t this good!
I am sitting inside the XD auditorium as I type this. In a nutshell, it’s the same IMAX screen with updated decor. Better seats, snazzier side paneling, in line with Cinemark’s color scheme. They’re running Barco’s Aura 11.1 sound. I’ll report on how it sounds when the movie’s done. So far, pretty good.
The Cinemark website now has this theatre as “Cinemark 18 & XD”
Whose initiative was it to drop IMAX from this theater: Cinemark’s or the IMAX company?
I was at the Rave last week and there were temporary construction barriers blocking off the old IMAX entrance. So they were doing some sort of work on that auditorium.
Also, has Cinemark officially dropped “Rave” as the name? I understand that large outdoor signage may take a while to change, but the website still says Rave 18 (the “IMAX” has been removed from the name, though).
The new XD screen in the old IMAX auditorium opens tomorrow according to a huge ad in today’s LA Times. It states the new name of the theater is Cinemark 18 and XD Los Angeles.
What gets me is they list in the ad “State of the art Digital Sound!” What the heck does that mean, is this 1995 or something, is it Barco Auro, is it Dolby Atmos, is it Dolby 7.1 or 5.1?? They also state “Oversized Screen!!” Again, what does that mean…is it a 70 foot screen or a 60 foot screen, how does that differ from the other screens. I just think this is bad marketing. Maybe its just me, but Cinemark should give us a reason to visit the theatre where they ripped out the best IMAX in LA.
It finally happened. The IMAX auditorium is no more here. The 70mm projector is gone. Cinemark says the space will become a “XD” screen. RIP IMAX 2001-2014.
Sorry to say, the days of 70mm IMAX here are just about numbered. Cinemark is about to convert it into their so called “xD” auditoriums. Overall, the presentation quality here has really gone downhill.
Saw “Man of Steel” on Saturday 6/15 w/the IMAX 15/70 projector still going strong.
Anyway want to guess the number days till they yank the IMAX 15/70 projector out. The last one in LA.
This theatre is now part of Cinemark due to their acquisition of Rave Cinemas on May 29, 2013.
Spent a night on LOCK DOWN inside this theater as a hostage situation unfolded across the way at Nordstrom Rack… free movies and popcorn…. strange night.
Saw The Dark Knight Rises IMAX yesterday… haven’t been to this theater in a couple of years since it was the Bridge… it’s still a great place to see a film and the IMAX is true!
We get it already. You don’t like multiplexes.

Someone at Rave must have read my last few comments. Because they have improved on their cleanliness and customer service. In addition, they now properly name themselves in their pre-IMAX spiel to the audience.
The decor’s changed too. All the neon green is gone. An orange/burnt orange/brown color scheme is now it its place. The 3rd floor bar/restaurant is now named “Rave Burger Bar” – although they only have 1 burger (!!!) on their menu. Even with all the updates and improvements, I still only come for IMAX. Blame it on the $2 parking…
Ever since the Rave takeover, the overall quality of this place (customer service, cleanliness, presentation) has NOSEDIVED! At this point in time, I only come here for IMAX movies. Nothing else.
I went here on Saturday 7/17. The NA to Rave transformation is complete…or so I think.
The decor is exactly the same. The LED flat screens that direct folks to their auditoriums and the credit card kiosks have been Rave-ified. 12 Lounge (the restaurant/bar) has been renamed CRAVE and the menu has been tweaked. Concessioh stands switched from Pepsi to Coke. The IMAX auditorium looks exactly the same…but the opening spiel welcoming folks to the theatre was…WEIRD:
“Hello and welcome to the IMAX Theatre In West Los Angeles for this evening’s presentation of INCEPTION!”
IMAX THEATRE IN WEST LOS ANGELES? WTH??? No mention of Rave. Just absolutely bland. Makes me wonder if Rave’s planning to rename this theatre after all.
