Sundown Drive-in

The Sundown Drive-in Theatre opened on October 1, 1966 on a 10-acre parcel of land. The opening program was Mary Ann Mobley in “Get Yourself a College Girl” & Gary Clarke in “Wild Wild Winter”.

In 1996, during a summer showing of the blockbuster movie “Twister”, an actual tornado touched down, destroying both screens and damaging the concessions building.

In August 2007, the owner announced impending sale. However, as of July 2009, the Sundown Drive-In appeared to still be operational. It remained Saskatoon’s only drive-in, and was closed by 2014. By 2022 it was used for storage. In 2024 both of the screens were still standing and the drive-in was in use to park school buses.

Although the screens are still up, as of summer 2014 it’s being used as a parking lot for school buses.

I just checked the location again (also visible on Street View) and it’s now Sundown Storage Solutions. Better change it’s status to Closed.

The map location is incorrect. The drive-in was located (and the screens are still present) on the southeast corner of Highway 5 and 43, southeast of the location currently pegged on the map.

It’s actually Highway 5 and Highway 41 (not 43).

Opened with “Get yourself a college girl” and “Wild wild winter”. The drive-in lot(complete?) is now used by a outdoor storage facilty to store cars and buses.

The screens appeared to still exist as of 2020-21. Still being used to park school buses.

Appears to now be operating as “Sundown Storage Solutions”.

As of August 2024 the two screens were still standing on the site of Sundown Storage Solutions. They can be seen on Google Street View. They seem to be in good condition too. Maybe the owners of the property host movie nights for staff. LOL. As far as I can tell from Google Maps they’re the last remnant of Saskatoon drive-in screens as no evidence remains of the others.

A closer address is 2010 SK-5, Saskatoon, SK S7H 5S8, Canada.

Google Maps has updated their addresses and this puts it right on the projection booth/concession stand.

Although there is no grand opening date, this opened on October 1, 1966 with “Get Yourself A College Girl” and “Wild Wild Winter”. Ads from a few days later determine that this is a new drive-in so it’s very possible that this opened with both of those attractions mentioned.

The July 4, 1996 tornado which destroyed both of the screens and damaged the concession/projection stand actually occurred during the final minutes of intermission before “Twister” started, not during the movie. The other screen was showing “Executive Decision” at the time of the tornado. The theater was quickly rebuilt and was able to reopen before the end of the 1996 season.
