Pruneyard Dine-In Cinemas

Opened on December 25, 1969 as the UA Pruneyard 3, a three-screen theatre that became part of the Pruneyard Shopping Center in Campbell, an early version of a "Lifestyle Center" built in the 1970’s. The theater became part of the Camera Cinemas in 1994 and was renovated to its present configuration at the same time. It was closed by Camera Cinemas on April 9, 2017.

It was taken over by Pruneyard Dine-In Cinemas and after refurbishment re-opened in Fall of 2018.

The web site of Seattle architectural firm The Henry Architects lists the Pruneyard Cinema 7 as one of their projects. There is one photo of it on their slide show.

Before its remodeling, this was the UA Pruneyard, a triplex, with large auditoriums which had open beam ceilings.

Not so odd a name davidcoppock to longtime Bay Area residents who remember that the Santa Clara Valley was covered with orchards before it was covered with concrete and sprawl starting in the 1950’s. Prunes were one of the local crops and Santa Clara County had the largest prune growing area of the state.

1969 photo and below history added via Bob Emerson:

PRUNEYARD SHOPPING CENTER. San Jose.

It features three office towers built in 1970, one of which is the tallest building in the area outside downtown San Jose.

In the Center, there is an inn, many shops and a movie theater built in 1964 and renovated in 1994 and 2018.

Just to clarify, the theater portion opened in 1964. The rest of the complex opened in 1970.
