Plaza Theater

Opened as the Ivonhoe Theater on November 21, 1914 presenting vaudeville. It was renamed Plaza Theater in July 1915 and went over to screening movies. The Sandusky Register newspaper bought the Plaza Theater from Mrs. Gus Sun in 1958. Mrs. Sun inherited the theater from her father, John Himmelein, in 1957.

Mr. Himmelein had originally bought the Plaza Theater in 1917.

Moving Picture World of July 24, 1915, mentions the Plaza Theatre and John Himmelein. The house was originally called the Ivanhoe Theatre:

“The Ivanhoe theater, of Sandusky, recently constructed by Charles L. Blatz, has been brought under the control of John A. Himmelein, owner of the Sandusky and other houses, and its name has been changed to the Plaza. The house operated for a short time as a vaudeville theater, but the plan of the new management, it is understood. Is to show feature films only. It is being redecorated throughout, and will be one of the handsomest theaters in that part of Ohio.”

The newspaper page posted by rivest266 shows a courtesy ad placed by the theater’s architects, Steffens & Steffens. The Cleveland firm was established by brothers George H. and John F. Steffens in 1912 and dissolved in 1923.
