- Jul 14, 2009 — Cary’s first movie theater now community space
Opening on July 20, 1973, the South Hills Twin Cinema was Cary’s first ever twin theatre. It was located on Buck Jones Road across the street from the South Hills Shopping Center, near the Raleigh Beltline. The total seating capacity was 950. Screen One had 500 seats, and Screen two had 450 seats. It was also known as the Regency Theatres 1 & 2 on June 10, 1977. On January 26, 1979 it was taken over by Martin Theatres. By the mid-1980’s this theatre went from showing first-run features to becoming a second-run discout house under Carmike Cinemas, before it closed its doors in 1994. It was converted into a fitness gym in 1995.
The Beyond Fitness gym closed in 2006, and the building lay empty until 2008, when it was taken over by the Connections Church, which opened in 2009. The main hall can now seat 250 and has been equipped with projection facilities.

Nighthawk1: This theater operated under Consolidated Theatres from 1973(when it changed it’s name to the Regency Theatres 1 & 2 in 1975) until 1978. Martin Theatres owned it(when the name was changed to the South Hills Twin)until 1984. Carmike Cinemas took over in 1984 when they bought Martin Theatres(All of the moviehouses that were under Martin Theatres in Raleigh were the Valley Twin,the Village Twin,the Terrace Twin,and the Falls Village Twin Theatres);when the Carmike name was first used in the greater Triangle market in 1985. The South Hills Twin was closed in 1994 when the Blue Ridge Cinemas opened (which Carmike also shuttered the Terrace Twin and the Falls Twin theatres in Raleigh at the same time which were discount houses….The Valley Twin closed in 1988,and the Village Twin closed in 1991);leaving the Blue Ridge Cinemas(over at Blue Ridge Road near the State Fairgrounds at Western Blvd.)to become the only discount movie house not only in Wake County,but eventually the only discount theater East of Raleigh.
GODSPELL was the grand opening attraction of the South Hills Twin Cinemas on July 20,1973. It was shown on two screens.
STAR WARS was one of the theatres that got the exclusive engagement showing during it’s re-release on July 21,1978 and was on several theatres that was given the full DOBLY STEREO sound system exclusive when this theater was the Regency Theatres 1 & 2.
It did very well during the mid-1980’s and early 1990’s as a discount cinema under Carmike. I saw THE COLOR PURPLE here in 1987.

A Dobly Stereo System was installed for the Regency I & II Theatres in May of 1978 for its July 21,1978 re-release showing of STAR WARS. It was the only theatre in the Triangle that had this showing of the film.
In December 2015 the Wake County (NC) school board agreed to offer $1,425,000 for the former South Hills Twin Cinema building that’s currently used by Connections Church, for use as a new school site.

Taken over by Martin Theatres on January 26th, 1979, and renamed back to South Hills Twin.
