The Fortuna Theatre was a neighbourhood theatre in the Wah Fu Estate, which is a public housing estate on a slope on the southern part of the Hong Kong Island.
The theatre opened to business on 26th January, 1979 with a Chinese language film.
Its 1,274-seat auditorium with stalls and balcony was on the first floor of the theatre building with the lobby and shopfronts on the ground floor. There was a large billboard on top of the theatre building facing the main road on the mountain slope.
In the early-1994, the theatre was twinned, with one auditorium in the stalls and the other in the balcony section of the theatre.
The theatre closed to business in March 2000, and reportedly re-opened for a few days every year.
The theatre was re-named the Hong Kong Opera House in early-2005, with basic stage apparatus installed in the auditorium of the former stalls, and Thailand style variety shows were performed at the theatre. In early-2008, the licence of the performances was revoked due to the inconvenience brought by the Mainland China tourist-audience to the neighbourhood.
The Hong Kong Opera House re-opened for a few days in the late-2008, and its name is still listed in the "joint advertisement of Hong Kong theatres " published by the Chinese language
Ming Pao and its advertisement in Chinese literally translated as " renovation underway, no films to be shown, and will re-open in the near future."

Does anyone know if it still opens sometimes? Also, I don’t really understand the part about the Mainland China audience for this is not really a tourist place…

It was run by Far East holdings which owned/managed many regional cinemas in Hong Kong during the 80s. Fortuna had a very similar stripy decor as Golden Valley in Kwun Tong.
