The Movies at Golden Ring, originally a 3-screen house on the upper level of Golden Ring Mall, opened June 27, 1976. A few years later, two more screens ("Movies 4-5") were added on the other end of the upper level, and in December 1985 another four rooms ("Movies 6-9") opened underneath Movies 4-5.
In its 1980s-early 1990s heyday, Golden Ring was said to be one of UA’s most profitible complexes, but by 1992 was in serious need of a technical and aesthetic upgrade. That fall, Movies 4-5 and 6-9 closed for that purpose, reopening in spring 1993. A few years later, Movies 1-3 were also closed for renovation, and the other houses were renumbered "Movies 1-6." Three more screens were built in the space of a former spa beneath the original Movies 1-3; connected by a common entrance, these were now "Movies 7-12."
The (original) first nine auditoriums were UA’s typical "shoebox" design of the 1970’s and 1980’s: oblong rooms with one aisle down the middle. The original Movies 6-9 were the smallest of the lot.
UA Golden Ring was also famous - or, perhaps, infamous - for a lengthy run of "Rocky Horror" (1985-1992).
By the mid-1990’s Golden Ring Mall, and the theatres, were losing business to nearby White Marsh Mall/Avenue at White Marsh, and the massive Sony Theatres (now AMC) megaplex there. The mall lost all its anchor stores and finally shut down in 2001. It was razed several years later.

This opened on June 27th, 1976 with three screens. Grand opening ad in the photo section.

9 screens on November 27th, 1985. Tiny ad in the photo section. davidcoppock, The mall has been torn down and rebuilt with a Walmart and others.
12 screens on December 23rd, 1994. No ad in the paper.
In the summer of 1980, after high school graduation, I moved up to Baltimore to spend a year with my dad before going into the Marine Corps, and I worked at Roy Rogers in the Golden Ring Mall. It’s now 2018 and I still have clear memories of the theater there. Among the movies I saw there: Motel Hell (hey, I was 18), Nine to Five, and The Howling.
