Located in the south of the city centre, not far from the famed Bon Marche department store. The Theatre du Vieux-Colombier was opened by Jacques Copeau in October 1913 as a stage theatre. His stage company included famous names as Gaston Gallimard, Charles Dullin, and Louis Jouvet, and together they would become one of the most important theatre movements of the 20th Century.
In 1924, the Theatre du Vieux-Colombier became an avant-garde cinema where Jean Tedesco introduced great names of the art cinema. After a closure in 1938, the theatre was reopened in 1944. In 1970 it was closed again, but it was named a historical monument and the French government bought it in 1986. Since 1993 it is one of the theatres of the Comedie-Francaise.
