This cinema opened on September 11, 1980. It closed on September 17, 1998. Its final films include The Truman Show, Dr. Dolittle, Mulan, The X-Files, Return to Paradise, and Six Days, Seven Nights. Encore Cinemas took over soon after.
This has now re-opened as CineStarz Burlington. This is the fifth CineStarz in the chain.

Correction: The Spectator article is dated Wednesday, December 19, 2012. There is no statement on the Encore or Upper Canada web sites about the closing, but there are no film titles or show times listed.
The Encore Upper Canada Place Cinemas are now closed. The final day of operation was this past Thursday, December 13. The reason for the closure was the high cost of digital conversion. A newspaper article disputes some of the above information. The venue had six screens with a total of 477 seats. It opened in 1985. Encore Films took over operation in 1999. An article appeared in the Spectator (Hamilton, Ontario) on Wednesday, December 21 entitled “Burlington downtown theatres go silent”. I don’t attend these theaters anymore (and haven’t for five years, or so). Bad luck or bad theaters? I’d say the picture was fine, but: I saw “The First Wives Club” there and Midler’s and Keaton’s voices are very distinct. The film/projection speed was a little fast, and their voices sounded…fast and higher. There was a vintage Dionne Warwicke song used in the film, and I thought it ‘sounded’ like her (like, maybe they used a ‘sound-alike’ or something). According the end credits, it WAS her. And on top of that, there was no heat. There was a portable space heater standing in the aisle (one left aisle in this aud) and an usher checked it, every-so-often. Not too distracting. Another time, at the start of the show, the music was left on throughout the trailers and the first five minutes of the movie. A few patrons finally exited, and I assume they alerted somebody of the problem. And just small, in general. I haven’t been back since.
I thought that the Rainbow Market Square 6 in downtown Toronto was also one of the “original” Cineplex theatres, having opened around 1981 or ‘82 and before Canadian Odeon taking over Cineplex theatres.
This is a great theatre to see second run films. The theatres are small, but cozy. Great popcorn. I am so glad they were able to re-open it!
The Encore Upper Canada Place Cinemas opened to the public on September 11, 1980 as the Cineplex 6. It was the third Cineplex cinema opened by Garth Drabinsky and Nat Taylor in the pre-Odeon days. The first six films screened were: The Shout, The Changeling, The Marriage of Maria Braun, My Brilliant Career, The Black Stallion and Brubaker. Cineplex Odeon closed the cinemas in the fall of 1998. We took it over and renovated the building and reopened the following summer. This is the last “original” Cineplex operating today. We play mostly commercial films in move-over/second run. We also play some alternative, Canadian and foreign films.
We operate standard 35mm equipment. Three cinemas are stereo and the balance mono or “front-surround”. Cinema 1 is equiped for video playback as well.
The Encore Upper Canada Place Cinemas in located @ 460 Brant Street in Downtown Burlington. The Encore Cinemas shows 2nd run movies @ cheap prices.
