Located in Clerkenwell, south of Islington, and east London inner city district. The People’s Picture Playhouse opened on 25th January 1913 and had its entrance on a corner site. Seating was provided on a single floor.
It was re-named Globe Cinema in 1920, and in 1951, it was re-named Rio Cinema. This didn’t last long as the Rio Cinema closed on 29th October 1955 with Broderick Crawford in "Down Three Dark Streets" and Robert Alda in "Two Gals and a Guy". The building stood empty and unused for many years. It was demolished in the mid-1960’s to enable the realignment of Skinner Street and the building of the Finsbury Estate council housing development in 1968.

We used to frequent the rio in the fifties it was at the end of its use by then and we affectionately called it the flea pit! Six pence entry every sat morning, all the kids smoking and cheering to the Bowery boys three stooges and the Lone Ranger etc., and three pence worth of chips in Exmouth market on the way home! Ah those were the days poor but without a care!
