Located in the Rue du Progres, next to the old former railway station Gare du Nord. Replaced at first by the Martini building, it opened before 1914 as Rheingold Cinema, located under the hotel of same name. In the 1920’s it was re-named Cinema du Progres, then Astral Cinema.
In the mid-1930’s it became Cine Filmac under the direction of the Soudan circuit. It specialised in western and action movies, for example "The Crimson Pirate" with Burt Lancaster. In 1962 Stanley Kubick’s “Spartacus” was showed in third run after Varieties Cinema, Victory Cinema and Marni Cinema. There were 2 films on each programme, in 1964 I saw there "The Nutty Professor" with Jerry Lewis, second film in the programme was “Hey Let’s Twist” with Joey Dee and the Starlighters.
Due to the proximity of the Gare du Nord like its neighbour the Royal Palace Nord on the Rue de Brabant, the likes of French director Bertrand Tavernier or historian critic Patrick Brion had attended there in those 2 cinemas.
The Cine Filmac was destroyed by a fire in 1977, last films shown there were old Elvis Presley’s movies. All the block is now demolished and occupied by hotels.
