Opened on December 31, 1937 with Warner Baxter in “Vogues of 1938”. It was taken over by Cineplex in the 1960’s and they merged with Cineplex Odeon in July 1984. It was closed on October 31, 2000. This beautiful neighbourhood theatre was in the middle of the busy working-class Bank and Somerset area, which is now the city’s gay village and disco district. The theatre was demolished in March 2004.

What a shame it lasted all that time and then gets torn down for a grocery store !!!!!

I remember driving up from Toronto at oh-dark-hundred for a test screening of The Empire Strikes Back in 1980. At the time it was still being run by Canadian Odeon Theatres.

The Somerset Theatre opened its doors on December 31, 1937 with Warner Baxter in “Vogues Of 1938” along with a few unnamed shorts. It was once operated by Odeon Theatres Canada and finally Cineplex Odeon. It was closed on October 20, 2000 with “Gladiator”.
Both Canadian Odeon and Cineplex merged in July 1984, and the Cineplex Odeon identity was introduced the following year in 1985.
This article states that the closing was in fact on October 31st. Taken over by Cineplex in the 1960’s
